I was a junior in high school when the missile silo in Damascus, Arkansas blew up.  My father was on the volunteer fire department and was called to spread the word, “Get your things and proceed to a safe distance away.”  It was the middle of the night when mother woke my three siblings and me from our slumber, had us quickly prepare a suitcase, reminded us we need never forget our Bibles and as we got in the car, we opened the dog pen that held our pet beagle and her puppies.  If we were unable to return in a reasonable amount of time, then momma dog must be able to get to water and forage for food. We were terrified and we cried.

This event was the culmination of all the worries I carried in my heart as a child/youth.  The cold war was ever present on the news and the horrors of the Vietnam War and returning POWs was a reminder of worlds we might never touch, but must know if we were going to be compassionate citizens of planet earth. I was a closet consumer of news. It was my secret security. To know was to be forewarned and prepared.  In addition to this, the Titan missile silos were ever present on the horizon or our night time world.  Any direction you looked you could see the red blinking lights atop the radio towers at the sites.

The concerns of my heart were sometimes incapacitating.  My mind would not turn loose of nuclear holocaust and its real and present threat.  I did not want to live in a world that looked like Hiroshima. One sleepless night my father sat beside my bed and I confessed to him how distrustful I was of everything and everyone. Why did the Russians hate us so much? What was going on in the middle east, and Great Britain was having a little fuss in the Falkland Islands that had every one in an uproar!! The world was soon going to end!!!!!………  I knew I would go to Heaven, I just didn’t want to go tomorrow. I asked him to help me find peace of mind and heart.

Over the next serval days and weeks I spent a great deal of time with dad as we refinished some furniture and built shelves and cabinets for the home our family had recently built.  These were the golden days of my young life because I began to grow and mature in my spiritual understanding of God’s character. My faith grew, but my anchor was this conversation.

“Dad, why do people that don’t even know us, hate us?”

“I don’t know that everyone does. Do you thing there is a young girl in the USSR                   tonight asking her father why American’s hate her, even though they don’t know               her?”

           “Probably.”

“What should her father tell her?”

           “That we don’t.”

“Gretchen, your mother and I are doing our part to create peace on earth because                we love you.  Do you think other parents throughout the world are also building               peace for their children too?”

           “Yes dad.”

“Gretchen, as long as mother’s love their children, there will be people working                   harder for peace than for war.  You are going to be okay.  Fill your mind with                       good, wear yourself out doing right and love.”

Dad was correct.  I’m okay and to all the mothers under the sun, thank you for a love that promotes unity for a better world. Please never stop!

Happy Mother’s Day,

Gretchen

For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities, His eternal power and divine nature-have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that people are without excuse. Romans 1:20

Paul, the author, planned to bring the Gospel of Christ to the gentiles in Rome. He was presently in Corinth, but headed to Jerusalem with an offering for the suffering Jews who were being persecuted for their new found faith. Not sure that he would leave Jerusalem alive, he wrote this letter to the ‘capitol of the world’ explaining the nature of Jesus Christ and His Gospel.

Rome was also the capitol of depravity. These people had many gods but did not submit to anything but their own immoral pleasure. The flip side of this issue you find Jews so wrapped up in the ancient law and adhering to standards  impossible to attain. In both of these extremes, the All Mighty Power and Wonder of God’s creative character, is lost in a man centered mentality.

God owes man nothing, certainly not a verification of His existence. Still, everything about creation speaks that we are His glory, the very thing He created for and God is daily, revealing Himself, His character, in the mundane everyday rising of the sun and the setting there of. If nothing else, this is reason to believe and praise.

And he took the calf the people had made and burned it in the fire; then he ground it to powder, scattered it on the water and made the Israelites drink it. Exodus 32:20

God is faithful.  For His covenant nation, He set them free from their slave master, the pharaoh.  He provided manna from Heaven and gave them water to drink.  When they found themselves trapped between pharaoh’s advancing army and a body of water, God led this young nation across an ocean on dry land, followed by the demise of the enemy that pursued them.

The time came when God called Moses, the leader of these sojourners, to worship and to receive the laws that would keep them Holy.  The people in the valley grew impatient, convincing themselves that Moses had deserted them, they demanded their interim leader make a god they could touch and see.  He complied. While their loving God was commanding these people to have no other gods, they were creating one by their own will.

Moses returned from the mountain to find those he had such hope for, dancing around a calf made out of gold. He took this idol, melted it and ground it into dust. He then sprinkled it on water and made the people drink it.  Sooooooooo…….as do all things that inter one’s body, this idol eventually made its way through the various waste systems of the Hebrew children.  Yes, their idol literally became poop!

Love the LORD, your protector, provider and lover of your soul, with all your heart and put nothing before Him.

Wait for the LORD: be strong and take heart and wait for the LORD. Psalm 27:14

The main theme of Psalms is trust, praise, rejoicing and mercy. This beautiful psalm has all of the above. I encourage you to read this passage and rest in its peace.

David hungers, with single minded focus, for the company of the LORD. Waiting on the LORD is filled with a great deal to do. Despair and shame are not on the agenda. In the assurance that everything will be as God our creator/conqueror intends, then faithful patience will be a time of praise and worship.

Waiting is also a season of working. Strength is grown, plans for victory are strategized and practiced, faith is made complete and God becomes the One True God. Waiting is essential and valuable. Don’t miss or waste this precious time with your Savior. Hunger for Him alone.

Happy Thursday,

Gretchen

To the weak I became weak, to win the weak. I have become all things to all people so that by all possible means I might save some. I Corinthians 9:22

I Corinthians chapter 9 begins with the phrase, “Am I not free?” and in verse 19 Paul continues, “Though I am free and belong to no man, I make myself a slave to everyone to win as many as possible.”

We all have rights. These rights are derived from a full spectrum of sources that includes everything from the Constitution of the United States to freedom in Christ.  However, a right is not a command, an entitlement or a standard to measure the most clever litigator, it is a responsibility and a conduit to spread the Gospel.

Paul was not exempt from critics among his contemporaries and the churches he began.  One of the strongest criticisms he faced was the fact that he never drew the salary of a missionary, choosing instead to support himself as a tent maker.  The Bible clearly provides for the support of ministerial personnel and Paul doesn’t discredit this. Rather, he refused to give anyone a reason to imply he ministered for any purpose other than the Kingdom of God.

Christians should define their freedoms by the image of Christ that those around them must see in order to trust and believe. There are more important things than rights…….such as someone else’s eternity.

“What do you want with us, Son of God?” they shouted. “Have You come here to torture us before the appointed time?” Matthew 8:28-29

Because Jesus was the Son of Man, He had the right to live among us.  Because He was the Son of God, He had the power to win back the authority Adam forfeited, to have victory over sin!

Jesus was walking along a road with His disciples and met two men who were demon possessed. They were so violent no one could pass by. They had been banished to the tombs, somewhere desolate and isolated from human contact.  The demons within these men recognized Jesus for who He was.  They were also very aware that their reign of evil was already time stamped.  However, it is very telling that they would rather live in a pig’s body and mind, than be exiled to their torturous destiny.

Jesus was always compassionate toward those overcome by Satan’s manipulations and bondage. The town’s people chose their income over the soul’s of two men, but Jesus had already taught the cost of following Him would take His followers down roads filled with the socially unacceptable and the unreceptive.

The state of the place or people doesn’t determine where Jesus goes.  His love and compassion do. And remember, in His presence, the things that harm you flee in fear. Every man may not believe Jesus has the power, but every demon does!

Have a great day,

Gretchen

But you have come to Mount Zion, to the city of the living God the Heavenly Jerusalem. You have come to thousands upon thousands of angels in joyful assembly, to the church of the firstborn, whose names are written in Heaven. You have come to God, the judge of all men, to the spirits of righteous men made perfect. Hebrews 12:22-23

Mountains are covenant reminders. God gives us visual aids to direct us in paths of righteousness.  As the final process of God’s covenant with the children of Israel, they had to walk between two mountains. From Mount Gerizim blessings of obedience were shouted, while the curse of disobedience was declared from Mount Ebal. (Joshua 8:33-34) As God’s people settled in their new home, they would look across the horizon, see the silhouette of two mountains and remember, the blessing of obedience versus the pain of disobedience.

In keeping with this covenant reminder, the writer of Hebrews speaks of Mount Sinai where the Law of God was given.  This law became impossible to keep and led to judgement and condemnation. But the God of Life made a New covenant through the final sacrifice of Jesus’ blood.

A better way has been made. Be encouraged that God seeks to create life, not destroy it.  Zion, the Body of Christ, is a place of hope and celebration, not a geographical entitlement, but a state of reality in which we are perfected by Jesus’ love. You have a cheering team in Heaven that thrills at your every victory and God is making your way straight.  Don’t give up on doing right and good!

Gretchen

Sunday Stories, May 6, 2018

No one dreams of aging to the point you mirror a serious resemblance to Santa Claus, but when this happens, the good guys embrace it and invest in a red suit with all the accessories. It’s one of life’s delightful surprises, to realize the mystery of Saint Nicolas and his legendary deeds of benevolence, have fallen upon you and suddenly you attain super hero status. As for me, I’m the lucky girl that gets to snuggle up to a jolly ole elf all year long.

Bringing St. Nick to life each Yuletide was great fun. Just another adventure for one who loves people and seeks to bring them joy. The glamour lasted until an innocent child climbed onto ‘Santa’s’ knee and asked him to make her mommy and daddy love each other again.

While Santa, (aka Keith) had the advantage of disguise, this child did not.  Keith knew well the story behind the request and was very aware that unless two people gave their hearts to Jesus and allowed Him to redeem and restore, there was no hope for this young family to live in unity ever again.

Children intuitively know something intimate happens to bring them into being and when those two people who once shared great passion, then marveled at ten tiny toes, can no longer stand the sight of each other, it disturbs and interrupts their world profoundly. Being an ambassador to childhood’s wonder and hope brought both Keith and I to a place of helplessness, but also a determination to live better in love and allow the power of God’s grace and mercy to become the hallmark of all our relationships.

Several years earlier our own child, upon being encouraged to pray about a similar concern, announced that she was finished with God because He didn’t answer her plea.  She had been  taught that He could do anything He wanted, so He must be as fake as the Easter Bunny! She had the evidence to prove it.  Fortunately, she matured and came to understand free will and the complications of inter-personal relationships, but I will never forget her broken heart over the pain of a friend’s divided home.

I understand disappointment and deceit, pain and sorrow, and the utter depths of despair.  I also know the transformation of forgiveness, redemption and restoration.  Man’s fallen state brings ruin, but Jesus’ blood makes makes ALL things new.

If you believe the next best gadget will pacify a child and cover a multitude of personal failures,  you are mistaken.  Children want to be loved and to witness love generously and extravagantly extended to others.  Righteous behavior, holiness of heart, commitment and determination are the best gifts under the Christmas Tree. Santa can’t provide this, only mom and dad can.

Love is patient and kind. It protects, trusts, hopes, perseveres and rejoices in truth. It is not proud or self-seeking, it does not boast, dishonor, anger easily or delight in evil. Love NEVER fails.  Prophecies will cease, tongues will be stilled, knowledge will pass away, but love will remain.

I Corinthians 13:4-8 paraphrased.

Love matters a lot.  Don’t say if you don’t mean it and if you say it, commit to it forever!

Gretchen

“Go away! What do you want with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are – the Holy One Of God!” Luke 4:34

The Bible doesn’t say much said about demon possession before and after Jesus walked on earth, but many instances are mentioned while He was in the flesh.  Satan engaged head on with God for authority and dominion over our souls.

There will come a day when those who say they do not believe, see truth for themselves and bow to their knees also. They will recognize that which satan acknowledged, Jesus is the Holy Son of God.

With authority, Jesus cast satan and his minions out and emancipated their victim.  The winner between good and evil has been declared! Game over!  Still, man has free will, therefore, satan has the capacity to harm and traumatize. Our choice determines our destiny, not fate or equal forces fighting for eternity.  One word, JESUS, nullifies the devil’s work.  There is life changing power on the tip of your tongue, so speak up!

Then the Jews began to argue sharply among themselves, “How can this man give us His flesh to eat?” John 6:52

Jesus fed five thousand people with five small barley loaves and two small fishes. After this long day of ministering, Jesus sent his disciples across the Sea of Galilee to ready for the next day’s work. Later Jesus walked out on the water to join them. Some people followed Jesus for the free food and miracles, you know, dinner and a show, but Jesus begins to teach that He is the Bread of Life.  He had so much more to give than earthly comfort.

The people that were listening to Jesus knew the ancient story of manna from Heaven for the Hebrew children. In verse 49 it says, “Your forefathers ate the manna in the desert, yet they died.” And in  verse 35 Jesus said, “I am the bread of life, He who comes to me will never go hungry or thirsty.”   Jesus is expressing His connection to Heaven, the ancient covenant people and the covenant making process in which a meal is shared and the identities of the covenant partners become one.

Some Jews there were deliberately being obtuse. They knew Jesus was not being literal, but chose exaggerated drama hoping of obscure the truth and excuse their continued hunger for earthly power and personal agenda that oppressed others. Jesus came to give us everything we need to live eternally. We must choose to fill ourselves with Him and take His identity as our own. This is true communion, taking the flesh and blood of His body into our own.

Gretchen
